Occupy Our Food Supply

There is a new "occupy" movement that has taken hold that starts today, It's called "Occupy Our Food Supply".  It's branched from the occupy wall street movement, but this one seems a little bit more organized.  There are quite a few famous people backing this movement including Michael Pollan (I highly recommend his books on food, very insightful).  As a farm we support some of the things associated with the Occupy Our Food Supply, below are some of them.

Some of the main points of the Occupy Our Food Supply:
-Resist GMO and genetic engineering of food
-Get to know your farmers and where your food comes from
-To create a sense of community
-Support family famers
-Encourge people to buy locally grown foods
-Stand up for fair trade

If you follow this blog or if you follow us on twitter (@gallofarm) or our friend on facebook (Gallo Family Farms) then I'm sure you are already an activist for knowing where your food comes from! Now on to updates about the farm

We still have plenty of chard and kale and we are selling it at $3 a bunch.  You can comment on the blog, send us a DM on twitter, hit us up on facebook, or e-mail us if you are interested in buying some. (email: gallofamilyfarm@gmail.com)

Our cold frame is completely finished and has held up well, and has come in handy with the snow that Denton got about 2 weeks ago.  Our beets are coming in nicely and will hopefully be ready in the next few weeks.

The Denton Community Market (not to be confused with the Denton CountyFarmer's Market) starts up in May, so a lot of work will be done in the next few weeks to make sure we have plenty of produce for you.

If you ever want to come and check out our farm, don't be afraid to ask, and we welcome any questions you may have about how we grow our produce.  We'll be more than happy to answer any questions, comments, or concerns you may have.

Have a good monday

A Little About the Farm & an Update

Since this is our first blog, I'll give you the low down on Gallo Family Farms:
-We are based out of Sanger, TX
-Everything that is grown is started with USDA certified organic seeds.

We just want to be able to provide locally grown, fresh, organic produce; all our produce is available at the Denton's Farmers Market during the summer.  One of our main goals is to keep the dollars within Denton and provide a sense of community among growers.  We Denton Do It did a video featuring the owner of Gallo Farms, Joe Paul Gallo, check it out. Interview with Joe Paul Gallo by We Denton Do It

Right now we have Swiss chard, dinosaur & red Russian kale that is ready for harvest.  Today we planted Jupiter, red, and golden beets as well as crooked neck squash.  All of this is currently in our cold frame which has been very useful during some of these cold fronts we have been getting.

Most of today included planting beets and squash and getting a lot of old plants pulled up.  Pretty soon the tilling will begin and new seeds will be getting put in.  Check back often, the blog will hopefully be updated once a week when the growing season really begins.
